Volume IV of Trees of Costa Rica offers a field guide describing 238 species of trees with simple leaves from 18 plant families. It stands out for its utility beyond Costa Rica and provides uniform species information for comparative identification, with illustrations and distribution maps. This book reflects decades of research and study dedicated to the country's tree flora.

The volume IV is a continuation of the series Trees of Costa Rica, started 42 years ago to describe the tree flora of a rich biodiversity country. This field guide contains 238 simple leaves species of Costa Rica, trees, comprise in 18 plants families, Fabaceae-Malpighiaceae. Only 39 of them are endemic, meaning this volume include species with a wide distribution range, and for that, it will have a great utility within Central America region.

The book offers information of tree groups (families) that are well known by its economic importance, high diversity, taxonomically complex and for been dominant in our forests. The information by species it been standardized to reach the maximum parallelism between them, to facilitate the comparative identification. The drawings show relevant diagnostic features that characterized each species and the distribution maps help to take decisions at the moment of making any identification. The pictures illustrate the beauty and identity of some of the species included.

This volume summarized the intensive work of exploration and taxonomic studies done in our forests in the last 33 years, in which, the trees are been studied with emphasis.
